Occupational health is a demanding sector with many moving parts to consider — and that's where on-site medical clinicians shine! From managing immediate medical concerns to maintaining a secure work environment, these specially trained professionals keep the balance.

But what exactly does this position entail? We have a conversation with J. Davis, an on-site medical clinician, to find out!

What is the most rewarding part of your job as an on-site occupational medical clinician?

The most rewarding part of my job is working with different people from all over, and helping those who may have been injured or need advice.

How do you build relationships with patients?

I always start by reading the room and trying to make a patient smile or laugh. I'm honest about pain upfront and treat every patient like they are family!

Can you walk us through a typical day at an on-site medical clinic?

I wake up at 4:30 AM, make coffee, and leave home by 5:15 AM for a 25-minute commute. I arrive at the on-site medical clinic early to check emails and prepare for appointments. We open at 6:00 AM and see patients until 6:45 AM. Then, we conduct on-site orientations and drug testing

Afterward, we input drug test results, handle follow-up appointments, and do site walks. We have lunch around 11:00 AM, continue with site walks, and prepare the clinic for the next day before closing at 5:30 PM.

What are your main job responsibilities as an on-site medical clinician?

As the on-site lead at a large data center project, I keep records of injuries, treat work and non-work-related injuries, manage supplies, and maintain open communication with clients and our team.

How do you collaborate with other groups on-site?

I use Microsoft Teams daily to communicate with other sites and clinics. For referrals, I call the clinic directly. We collaborate with safety and wellness teams by engaging with construction workers, handing out snacks (fruit and popsicles are a favorite), and conducting health checks.

What does a successful day at an on-site medical clinic look like to you?

To me, a successful day is when I learn something new or teach someone something!

How did you get into the occupational health field?

After serving in the Navy, I worked in a junkyard but wanted something more rewarding. So, through my GI Bill, I attended EMT and paramedic school.

I started in EMS in 2015 and joined Mobile Medical Corporation part-time in September 2021, becoming a site lead in January 2022.

What new skills have you learned since joining MMC?

I've become an administrator on Cority, improving its functionality for MMC.

What do you look forward to most each day as an on-site medical clinician?

Helping my co-workers is what I look forward to the most!

What important lesson have you learned from working with the MMC team?

Trust your instincts! If your gut tells you to put on safety glasses, do it!

What is your proudest professional accomplishment?

I served in the Navy for nearly 10 years and have saved several lives in EMS.

Where do you think you can have the biggest impact in your on-site medical clinician role?

I take pride in my on-site medical clinic and make it a point to mentor my co-workers. I believe in training others to ensure the company's growth!

Describe one of your favorite work memories in the occupational health industry.

Working on a fast-paced data center project in Iowa, completed in 90 days, was a favorite memory for me.

What advice do you have for those entering the occupational health field?

Just do it! Being an on-site medical clinician is a unique job with less stress than ambulance work, and you get to be home at night.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I enjoy hunting, working on home projects, and cooking. I love making prime rib and breakfast foods. In the fall, I enjoy watching the Georgia Bulldogs with my wife!
